I just went to watch a choir of Kids from Africa and they are asking for sponsors, scam? - africa for kids

I went to a nice group of African children to see, singing and dancing and drums .. Who has their stories of hardship in their community and country, and then played clips of the children are suffering .. asked sponsors and ask people to donate what they could .. was emotional for me, but I would not give money because I heard some of them are scams .. is that true? And if so, how can organizations that help children in third world countries like Africa, legitimate?
